The paper is 150 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours 30 minutes, with one mark for a correct answer and nothing deducted for a wrong one. Its parts are: Child Development and Pedagogy (ages 11–14) (30), Language I (30), Language II (other than Language I) (30), Mathematics & Science, or Social Science (60). The pass bar is 60% for general candidates, 57% with the OBC/OEC relaxation and 55% with the SC/ST/differently-abled relaxation.

K-TET is an eligibility test. Passing it makes you eligible for appointment as a teacher in a government or aided school in Kerala; it is not itself a job or an appointment, and no course can promise one. The certificate is valid for life.
